How to host multiple domains in one account

You can host multiple domains under one site account by adding additional domains as domain pointers to the primary domain name for your site account, creating subdirectories under the root directory of your primary domain and configuring them as web applications, then redirecting the domain pointer(s) to the subdirectory you created.

Configuring a Subdirectory as a Web Application
  1. Create the subdirectory via FTP. For information on how to configure various FTP programs to access your site, see this section of our Knowledge Base.
  2. Log in to Control Panel.
  3. Click the "Sites" tab.
  4. Click the "Manage" link next to the site you want to manage.
  5. Click the icon labeled "Application Starting Point."
  6. Click the "Browse" link next to the text box. A box will pop up with a directory listing for your site. Click the folder you want to mark as an application starting point and then click the green "Select" button.
  7. Click the green "Create" button to mark the directory as an application starting point.

You may also want to look into disabling inheritance for child applications in your root web.config if necessary. See these links for details:

Adding a Domain Pointer
  1. Log in to Control Panel.
  2. Click the "Sites" tab.
  3. Click the "Manage" link next to the site you want to manage.
  4. Click the button labeled "Domain Pointer."
  5. Click the green "Add" button.
  6. In the text box, enter the name of the domain you wish to add as a domain pointer. Make sure this domain is already registered.
  7. If you want to enable email alias service for the domain pointer, check the box next to "Enable Email Alias" (for more information on domain pointer email aliases, see this Knowledge Base article).
  8. Click the green "Create" button.

If you are not planning on changing your name servers to Winhost's, you will need to create/edit the A record for the domain you are adding as a pointer to the IP address of your site. You can find the IP address of your site in Control Panel. To obtain the IP address for your site, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Control Panel.
  2. Click the "Sites" tab.
  3. Click the "Manage" link next to the site you want to manage.
  4. On the left hand side, in the box labeled "Site Info," look for "Site IP Address." This is the IP address for your site.

If you want to change the name servers for your domain with your current registrar to Winhost's, see these Knowledge Base articles for our name server information, and instructions on how to change your name servers with various registrars:

Accomplishing the Redirect

There are two ways to redirect a domain pointer to a subdirectory: using the URL Rewrite module in IIS, or programmatically with a redirect script. For information on the URL Rewrite module, see these links:

For instructions on how to connect to your site with IIS Manager, see this Knowledge Base article.

For sample code on how to redirect a domain pointer to a subdirectory programmatically, see this Knowledge Base article (it is written for subdomains, but applicable to domain pointers as well).

For further assistance with redirecting requests programmatically and with URL Rewrite, please visit our community forum. Unfortunately, the support department cannot assist with redirection questions via help desk tickets.
