SQL Profiling service

If you experience database locking or performance issues, or just want to do general database tuning, we offer a SQL profiling service.

SQL Profiler captures all of the SQL queries issued to the database, as well as the CPU/IO usage associated with each statement. SQL Profiler traces are useful in identifying production environment problems that may be difficult to recreate in a development environment.

Our trace service is offered at a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes. Since profiling is very resource intensive, we cannot offer profiling in excess of 15 minutes.

Web-based SQL database management

We offer an online tool to manage your SQL database via web browser. You can access the tool at:

https://sqladmin.winhost.com/

The following information is required to log in. If you are unsure of any of the information, log in to Control Panel and go to: Site Info Manager > MS SQL Manager > Manage Database.

Server name: Click the dropdown box and choose the correct SQL server name for your database.

Database: Enter your database name.

Authentication: Choose SQL Server Authentication.

Login: Enter your Database username.

Password: Enter the password associated to your database.

Reviewing your SQL database

To review the information for a SQL database on your WinHost account, log in to Control Panel and go to: Site Info Manager > MS SQL Manager > Manage Database.

Database Name: This will be the name of your SQL database.

Version: The SQL server version your SQL database is running on.

Database Server: Also known as the SQL host name or SQL server name, this is the name that will be used to remotely connect to the SQL server.

Database User: The Primary database user for this database. The Primary database user will only have DBO rights to its own database

Database Password: Password assigned to your Primary Database User. The "Edit" link will allow you to reset the database password. By default the database password will match the Site Account password.

Assigned Quota: Displays the SQL quota assigned to this database. The "Edit" link will allow you to modify quota for this database.

Usage: Displays the current quota usage of your database.

Tools: Displays the tools to Backup or Restore your local SQL database to our SQL server. Refer to this Knowledge Base for instructions on how to properly utilize these tools. How do I generate (or restore) a backup of my MS SQL database?

Connection String: Displays a connection string example for coding. This is merely an example and depending on the language used, may require modifications. For security reasons, the password will not be displayed and will require you type the correct password on your web application.

How to transfer a local SQL database to a Winhost SQL database

To transfer your local SQL database to a Winhost database:

Back up your local database with Management Studio
Upload the backup of your database with .BAK extension to your web site via ftp
Use restore tools in Control Panel to restore the backup to your Winhost database

Please use Microsoft Book Online for the instructions on how to backup your local database or see this community forum post for instructions.

Important notes:

Microsoft SQL databases cannot be attached or restored to previous versions of SQL Servers. That means that SQL Server 2008 R2 database can only be attached/restored to R2 (or later), etc.
Restore backup is available on all Winhost plans, but the attach tool is a premium feature that is only available on the Ultimate or Power plan.

After you have backed up your local database and uploaded the backup file with .BAK extension to your web site:

Upload the backup file with .bak extension you want to restore to your site via ftp
Log in to Control Panel
In the navigation menu click the "Sites" tab
In "Your Sites" section, click the domain link for the site you'd like to manage
In the "Site Tools" section click the "MS SQL Manager" icon
Click the "Manage" link next to the database you'd like restore your backup to
Click the "Restore" button next to the "Tools" label
Click the "Browse" link next to the "Backup File to Restore" text box and locate your backup file on your site
When the .bak file is located, click on it and click the "Select" button
Click the "Restore Backup" button

"Filegroup is full" error when attempting to run a SQL query

When attempting to run an SQL query, an error similar to the following is returned:

Could not allocate space for object 'xxxxx' in database 'SQL2012_xxxxx_xxx' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. The statement has been terminated.

This error indicates that your database size has exceeded the allocated amount. To increase the amount of space allocated to your database:

Go to the MS SQL tool in Control Panel
Click the "Manage" link for the appropriate database
Click "Edit" in the Assigned Quota line
Enter a value larger than the Assigned Quota in the New Quota field
Click the "Update" button

NOTE: If you are on the Winhost Basic plan, you have a maximum database quota of 500mb. In order to use more database space you must upgrade to he Winhost Max plan, which provides 2,000 MB of database space, or the Winhost Ultimate plan, which provides 5,000 MB, or the Winhost Power plan, which provides 10,000 MB.

How to Create and Restore an MS SQL Database Backup on Winhost

You can generate a backup of your MS SQL database directly from the Winhost Control Panel. The system creates a .bak backup file that’s stored in your hosting account and made available for download via FTP. This file can be used as a safety copy of your database or for local development.

Creating a Database Backup

Log in to your Winhost Control Panel.
Navigate to the MS SQL section.
Find the database you want to back up, and click the Manage link next to it.
Click the Backup option.

Once the backup process finishes:

A file will be generated in the format:
[DatabaseName]_backup.bak
The backup file will be placed in the /App_Data folder within your hosting account. (If this folder doesn’t already exist, it will be created automatically.)
If a backup file with the same name already exists in /App_Data, the process will fail — so be sure to rename or download existing backups before creating a new one.

Restoring a Backup to a Winhost Database

Before restoring, make sure that:

The .bak backup file is located in your site’s /App_Data directory.
The backup file name must have .BAK extension.

To restore:

Go to the MS SQL section in your Control Panel.
Click the Manage link next to the database you want to restore.
Choose the Restore option.

⚠️ Important: Restoring a database will completely overwrite the existing database and replace all current data with what’s in the backup file.

Additional Options

Attach Database Feature:
If your hosting plan includes the Ultimate or Power level, you may also have access to an “Attach Database” feature for working with SQL database files. Refer to this Winhost knowledge base article for details.

How to connect to a SQL server using SQL Server Management Studio

Before you attempt to connect, make sure you have created a database in Control Panel using the MS SQL Manager tool.

Creating a New MS SQL Database in WinHost

Log in to your WinHost Control Panel at
https://cp.winhost.com
In the navigation menu under the WinHost logo, click the Sites tab.
Click the site link for which you would like to create a database.
Click the MS SQL Manager button.
Click the Add button.
Choose the desired database version.
Enter the database suffix and quota for the new database.
Click the Create button to finish.

Note: You will need to download and install SQL Server Management Studio to connect to a SQL database. Also make sure to update your MS Management Studio to the latest version. You can download the latest Management Studio from Microsoft site here.

Open SQL Server Management Studio. The "Connect to Server" window will open. Select/enter the following:

Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: [The SQL server name can be found in Control Panel in Sites -> MS SQL Manager -> Manage]
Authentication: SQL Server Authentication
Login: [SQL database Login name]
Password: [SQL database Password]

Click "connect" and you will be connected to the SQL server.

If you are planning to use one of the Contained Database users (SQL 2012 and 2022 only) to log into your database you will need to specify the database:

Go to Options/Connection Properties
Go to "Connect to database" and enter your database name
