How a new site is pro-rated

A charge is posted when upgrading/downgrading to a new plan, when changing the billing cycle, or when ordering a new site in your account. The charge starts from the order processing date and going for the full billing period, rounded down to the account's Monthly Billing Day.

Ordering new site example:

For a 1-Year plan with a Monthly Billing Day of the 23rd, processed on May 12th, the charge will be from May 12th of this year to April 23rd of next year. It will not charge to May 23rd because that would be a charge of OVER 1 year.

Plan upgrade/downgrade or billing cycle change example:

For a 1-Year plan with 4 months remaining and a Monthly Billing Day of the 7th, processed on July 16th, the charge will be from July 16th of this year to July 7th of next year. The 4 months remaining is credited and applied to the charge and has no further bearing on the new billing period.

Monthly Billing Day

Every account has a Monthly Billing Day.

It is set when the account is first opened.

It is one day before the account opening day.

It cannot be changed.

Many billing functions rely on this day to know when to run, such as monthly Billing Statements.

For example, if your account was opened on the 12th of any month, the Monthly Billing Day will be the 11th of every month. If it was opened on the 1st, the Monthly Billing Day will be the 31st of every month. For months that do not have a 29th, 30th, or 31st, the system will use the last day of that month.

When you change the billing cycle, you will be credited for the current billing period and charged for the new billing period.

On doing the change, a credit is generated overnight for the unused portion of the old billing period. Then a charge for the new billing period is posted. The charge amount will be like ordering a new site.

Any credit on the account would then be applied, with the difference being charged to the credit card on the account.

For instructions on how to switch your billing period, see This Knowledge Base article.

* If the credit card charge fails, the account will go into past due status, and we will attempt to collect again on the normal past-due schedule.

You can close your site starting in the Sites tab in Control Panel.

Click the Sites tab.

Click the link for your domain.

Click the "Close Site" button on the lower left.

What happens to domain name registration when a site is closed

You will still be able to log in to Control Panel to manage and renew any domain name you registered with Winhost even if you have no active sites.

How to cancel the entire account

To cancel your entire account, you will need to close each site and service individually. Your domain name(s) automatically renew unless you have turned off auto-renew for that domain. If you do not renew your domain name, it will expire at the end of the current registration period.

You can unlock your domain name and receive an authorization (or EPP) code by clicking the "Unlock" link in your domains list.

Refunds

If you are within 30 days of your initial sign up, then you will have the choice to cancel the site immediately and receive a refund of hosting fees under our 30 day money back guarantee, or you can close the account at the end of the current billing period and receive no refund. The 30 day money back guarantee does not apply to renewal terms, domain name fees, SSL certificates, other 3rd party services, changes in billing period/plan type, or any one time payment fees.

If the site is beyond 30 days of initial sign up, you will not receive a refund when closing your site. The site will remain active until the end of the current billing period. At the end of the billing period, the site will be closed.

If you want to keep the site active

If you later decide to keep your site, you can click the "Reactivate Site" link in Site Manager to remove the end date and keep the site active. Regular billing will resume when the site is reactivated.

There may be a charge to your credit card when downgrading your plan.

On downgrading your plan, a credit is generated overnight for the unused portion of the old plan. Then a charge for the new plan is posted. The charge amount will be like ordering a new site.

Since the period charged may be much longer than the unused portion of the old plan, this may result in a balance due. Any credit on the account would then be applied, with the difference being charged to the credit card on the account.

When you order a new site, the amount for the collection will be for the full billing period.

The charge amount is pro-rated, synced to your account's Monthly Billing Day so that all sites are renewed on the same day of the month.

The unused balance of the collection will be applied as a credit to your account.

<!--
For example; if you order a second WinHost Basic site in the middle of your monthly billing cycle your credit card will be charged $4.95, with $2.48 of that charge applied as a prorated credit. Next month you will only be charged $7.42 for both sites ($4.95 + $4.95 - $2.48 = $7.42).
